How to Fix Low Water Pressure
Do you live in a home that has a low water pressure system? If so, you might start to wonder if a shower head can increase your water pressure even though it’s really low. The short answer is, yes!
Before you switch to just any shower head, you should check how much water your shower uses per minute. In order to do so, follow these steps:
- Place a 5-gallon bucket under your shower.
- With your phone, time how long it takes for the water to fill the bucket.
- Start the time as soon as the water hits the bucket and end it when the water starts to overflow.
- Now take the time you got and divide it by five.
- This will result in the total gallons per minute (or gpm) that your shower head system runs on.
You might be wondering, why do I need to check the GPM? Depending where you live, GPM can be higher or lower depending on State policy. For example, California has a strict policy that all shower heads must have a maximum of 1.8 gpm for all shower systems while the U.S. legal maximum flow for all shower heads is 2.5 gpm.
Water Flow Restrictor
If you do not live in California, check to see if your shower head has a water flow restrictor attached inside of the shower head and replace it with a 2.5 gpm restrictor. This can help maximize your water pressure to give you a more relaxing shower.
There are many shower heads that already come with a 2.5 gpm restrictor, so check and make sure that your shower head is before purchasing it!
Clean Shower Head
You should also check if your shower head has any calcium build up on the nozzles. Calcium build up is the white crust that you see on the nozzles of your shower head. It is hard water mineral deposits that can clog up your shower nozzles which can prevent high water pressure.
You can clean this by soaking your shower head into a bucket of vinegar for at least eight hours to ensure that all build ups have deteriorated. If you have not replaced your shower head within the last 6 to eight months, it is best to toss it and get a new one.
